NJIT IDEA LOGO

Project Objective.

The objective of this project was to design a logo for the new NJIT Instructional Design, Evaluation and Assessment (IDEA) graduate degree program.

Research Process.

After reading and reviewing the assignment guidelines and the Idea (Instructional Design, Evaluation, and Assessment) graduate program requirements, my previous experience as an English teacher came to mind.

Contrary to colleague's beliefs that students who doodle are not paying attention in class, I believe that these students are usually the ones who are innovative and discovering exciting ways of learning and creating new ideas.

One of the many pre-writing and note-taking exercises that I would have my students do, when they were having trouble in their writing process or coming up with ideas, was doodling until there was a spark.

The doodling exercises helps students explore and imagine different possibilities.  This same practice would convey the overall focus and ultimate goal of the Idea Graduate Program.  "IDEA track is designed to teach students to build quality educational experiences at varying levels for diverse learner populations for any discipline of study or subject matter" (NJIT Online).

Elements and Principles of visual design incorporated.

  • Process

Step 1: Create Arial (2x8) typography using photoshop and print onto blank sheet of paper

Step 2: Trace IDEA word onto a blank sheet of paper

Step 3: Hand drew logo design

Step 4: Scan final IDEA logo onto computer in text, color and black & white. (tip: I used the color version and converted the image to black and white using photoshop)

Text                                                            Color                                                     Black & White

Step 5: Take pencil nub image and incorporate it to logo using photoshop (see pencil image process below under overcoming problems)

  • Change color of pencil to NJIT red (#CC0000)

  • Add NJIT logo to pencil

  • Add shadow and light to pencil to create texture and dimension

Problems Encountered and Resolved.

One problem that I encountered was that I could not find a pencil nub image that I could use, which was creative commons use appropriate. So, I created my own pencil nub and took a picture of it to incorporate into my logo.

Step 1: Cut a pencil to desired length with wire cutters

Step 2: Sharpen your pencil

Step 3: Take a picture of your pencil on a white background (tip: use a white piece of paper)
